Why isn’t this considered theft?

From MSN Money:

Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede
Shoppers swarm stores after a computer hiccup gives benefit cards unlimited purchasing power.

Wal-Mart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, La., saw a stampede and a shelf-clearing rush Saturday after a computer glitch for food stamp recipients led to benefit cards allowing unlimited purchases.

Police were called as entire shelves were being cleared out, until the glitch was fixed and low-income residents using the cards were no longer allowed to make purchases.

From news station KSLA:

“Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Wal-Mart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Wal-Mart was so packed, ‘it was worse than any black Friday’ that he’s ever seen.

Lynd explained the cards weren’t showing limits and they called corporate Wal-Mart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Wal-Mart said they wouldn’t press charges if she left the food.

More at the link.

If you continue, you’ll read that once it was announced over the store loudspeaker that the system was running properly again, a bunch of shoppers simply left their full carts and walked out. And that means that they knew that they were stealing from the government, and only stopped stealing when they knew that they couldn’t steal any more.

All of this stuff is computerized, of course, so the government can easily tell who outspent their EBT cards; it would be easy enough to prosecute them for theft. The Obama Administration won’t, of course, so the next easiest step would simply be to deduct the overcharges from their Food Stamps EBT cards next month, and the month after that, and the month after that, until the overages are made up, and if they happen to go hungry during that time, well too fornicating bad.

  1. You don’t have to bother to prosecute them. Just suspend their card’s
functionality until a sufficient number of time periods have elapsed to bring the budget back to a positive sum.

So, maybe it doesn’t work for three months, and then in the 4th month it’s good for 15 bucks instead of 140.00 or whatever.

Let’s hope they were smart enough to have stocked up on healthy and nutritious staples like enhanced flour, and rice, and beans, cooking oil, canned or frozen meat, and even eggs, which will if properly stored by intelligent and responsible persons, last that long.

I haven’t been into a Walmart recently, but the last time I was in a Costco, I did notice that 50 lbs of rice had gone up to 15 bucks.

  2. Remember, these people were most likely Obama supporters (based on the premise Obama has supported Government handouts) and will never return their ill-gotten goods because the Government owes them and the “Rich” have created their lot in life.

  3. Actually, I don’t blame the welfare bums for spending the government money. I blame the government for giving it to them in the first place.

If you have some pigs in your backyard and you keep feeding them, and the pigs keep coming back, do you blame the pigs?

  4. An obvious question: where was the WalMart store manager? Didn’t anybody notice all of the junk being bought with the food stamp EBT cards, and why didn’t the manager stop these purchases?

Actually, I don’t blame the welfare bums for spending the government money. I blame the government for giving it to them in the first place.

In this case, with the limits not set, they were not spending government money, but taking it directly from Wal-Mart.

I doubt there will be any recovery, but Wal-Mart may have enough connections to sweet talk the state into reimbursing them.

Right, but I blame the government for creating this entitlement mentality to start with. When people start expecting stuff for free, paid for by others, the whole idea of moral responsibility goes out the window. These people are already stealing, it’s just that, under the welfare system, the theft is legal.

  7. After reading an article on Hot Air about Big Business lamenting their Big Money not getting what it used to get, I wanted to write a rather longish article covering multiple aspects. Leftist nutjobs who screamed about Citizens United who will now attack Conservatives because the Big Businesses (the Left hated in Citizens) are beginning to wonder aloud if they should spend money on GOP politicians who no longer listen to them. (Without even realizing we Conservatives have said all along Big Business loves Big Government and the way to take money out of politics is to shrink government.) The possibility Big Business will leave the GOP and work to elect Big Business-loving Democrats, shoving the Socialists out of the Democrat power structure, while simultaneously helping the GOP return to its Conservative base — and the resultant all-around good that would do for the country. And more. But since I’m too busy with my small business venture, I don’t have the time or energy to do it justice.

By the way, this past week was a banner week for my company so far: over 6,000 dollars in revenue for the week.”

We’ll add that to what we have already passed along to your blog readers more generally.

You’re entitled to a little self-advancement rather than sacrifice.
