It’s the weekend and time, once again, for our version of Rule 5 Blogging. Robert Stacy McCain described as putting pictures of pretty women somewhat deshabille, but, on this site, our Rule 5 Blogging doesn’t put up pictures of Amanda Seyfried in her summer clothes, but women, usually full military gear, serving their countries in the armed forces. The terribly sexist authors on this site celebrate strong women, women who can take care of themselves and take care of others, women who have been willing to put their lives on the line in some not-so-friendly places, women who truly do have the “We can do it!” attitude. This week, well, this week is different. I was listening to one of my favoritest eighties songs, from ZZ Top:
ZZ Top doesn’t allow their official videos to be posted on YouTube, so this one doesn’t have much in the way of video, but it has the best music quality.

I have a special place in my heart for ZZ Top. When I picked up my daughter from school in my 1994 Camaro Z28 when she was a 6th grader, kids hung out of the school bus windows and yelled “ZZ Top Rules!” I was totally surprised that those youngsters actually knew who ZZ Top was. While I no longer have the beard that hit my belt buckle while I was seated and I no longer have hair that went beyond the middle of my back, I still sport a beard and my hair currently needs tied back while at work.
ZZ Top is a Texas 3-piece rock band. Of the three members of ZZ Top, two have the longish beards (but not nearly as long as mine was), while the beardless drummer has the last name of … Beard. I kid you not.
While I lived for 44 years in the great State of Ohio, I have now lived the last 2+ years just outside the world’s largest military base, Fort Hood, Texas. I would relish the opportunity to meet and become personally involved with a lifelong female member of the US Military who just happens to be younger than me. Yup, I love the Military and I love Military women. And I want to someday be involved with a Military woman.
Better go high and tight, then, with just a Van Dyke, to let them know that you’re a veteran.
My darling bride (or 33 years, 3 months and 13 days) and I went to a ZZTop concert at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater during the nineties.
I had a choice I had to make recently. Spend 10 bucks for a badly needed hair cut, or spend 3 bucks for some black, unfrilly hair bands. Since I weighed myself this morning at 127, different than last night’s 130, it is obvious my one-meal-a-day, spaghetti-every-day diet is not working to keep my weight on me. And, since I have already missed work this year because I couldn’t afford the gasoline to get to work, the 3 bucks was the more responsible choice than the 10 bucks. I won’t be getting a hair cut any time soon. I prefer getting to work and eating over a proper hair cut.
Oh, by the way, the 3 bucks for the black unfrilly hair bands gave me 20 bands. As each one will last several months, I have several years’ worth of hair bands for 3 bucks. The hair cut would have lasted me 3 months until I needed to make the decision all over again. So, I have, in effect, saved hundreds of dollars by spending 3 dollars on hair bands instead of spending money I don’t have on hair cuts.

I never saw a ZZ Top concert. In fact, I never paid to see any concert. But I did see concerts for free, and had absolutely amazing seats, as a member of the All-Ohio Junior Achievement Company at the Ohio State Fair.
Imagine standing directly in front of the stage for Beach Boys, America, Ambrosia, and many other bands with Governor’s Box tickets. What a time that was. I met my first love as a member of that “company” while actually and actively working (for free) in a booth at the Ohio State Fair. Too bad it didn’t “stick”. But as a High School student living 80 miles away from my true love, it was destined to fail.
Ahhh, but remember, John, if it had “stuck,” there’d have been no Laura!
