From The Washington Post:
Obama urges Romney to release previous federal tax returns, says important to be transparent

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has called on Republican Mitt Romney to release his past tax returns, saying that candidates for office need to be “as transparent as possible.”
Obama told Univision in an interview conducted at the Summit of the Americas in Colombia that candidates need to disclose their tax records as a way of letting the public know their financial background. It was the first time Obama had made the request personally, His campaign has pressured Romney to release a trove of tax documents going back to the 1990s.
“I think that it’s important for any candidate in public office to be as transparent as possible, to let people know who we are, what we stand for, and you know, I think that this is just carrying on a tradition that has existed throughout the modern presidency,” Obama said in an interview scheduled to air Sunday on Univision’s “Al Punto” program.
Romney has released tax returns for 2010 and provided an estimate for 2011 as part of the release of hundreds of pages of tax documents. The former Massachusetts governor filed for an extension on Friday for last year’s tax returns, a move he has made in the past.
This is laughable. Senator Barack Hussein Obama II (D-IL) didn’t want anybody to see his full birth certificate when he was running for President, and somehow, some way, couldn’t seem to get it released until April of 2011. Doug Ross and the Ace of Spades noted all of the other Obama records which have been sought, but seem to have remained private:
- Tax returns from the 80’s
- Tax returns from the 90’s
- Occidental College records and transcripts
- Columbia University records and transcripts
- Columbia Thesis paper
- Harvard University records and transcripts
- Medical records
- Illinois State Senate schedule
- Illinois State Senate records
- Law practice client list
- Certified Copy of Original Birth certificate
- Harvard Law Review articles published
- University of Chicago scholarly articles
- Record of Baptism
Amazing all of the things that President Obama has tried to hide. Why, it might even remind some people of the efforts of both Vice President Al Gore, in 2000, and Senator John Kerry (D-MA), in 2004, to paint themselves as real intellectuals and all-around smart guys, and George Bush as a dummy, only to have it come out that Mr Bush had slightly better grades than either of those august Democrats in college.1
And now, the truth: former Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) is a very wealthy man, and it did not help Mr Romney’s campaign during the primaries when he released his previous tax return. It fed into the image that his opponents tried to create, that Mr Romney wasn’t really “one of us,” but the even more privileged son of an already wealthy man. Mr Romney paid a relatively low rate of taxation, because his earnings were primarily in the form of dividends and capital gains, which are taxed at lower rates than ordinary income. There has never been the first hint of a scandal, financial or otherwise, concerning Mr Romney, and as a senatorial candidate, a gubernatorial candidate and two-time presidential candidate, many people have tried to find one; Larry Flynt has offered bounties of a million dollars for people who can document sex scandals concerning Republicans.
It’s all a feint, of course: President Obama wants the 2012 election to be about anything, anything, besides his actual job performance, because if it is about his job performance, he loses.
